Fall color Naches River

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

The foliage color in Yakima County has been very nice this fall, especially around and near the rivers and creeks. This was taken in morning just as sun rising through some rain clouds. The light was bright and very yellowish. I shone for about 5 minutes and then rain came.

Specific Feedback

Is it too saturated? Is it too dark in he shadows at bottom right and moving left? Any comments you have are appreciated.

Love the way the light is spilling in here Jim. It looks like it’s all on fire. The background is a solid support for the drama up front, without competing with the main event. The snow on the hills is a nice touch.

I think the shadows look fine for darkness. My preference is they have just enough detail to tease, and that’s what I’m seeing here. On the other hand, I often find they look more natural if I reduce the saturation in the shadows. Even if they really were saturated as the camera sees them, our eye tends to not see color as well in those dark areas and it looks more natural to reduce it IMHO.

John, Thank you.

Hi Jim,
I do not think it is too saturated as the warm yellow light is the way I would expect it to be with first light. The shadows are not to dark for my tastes and I am enjoying the snow capped mountains in the BG. Looks as though you caught some peak autumn colors.

I’m sorry I’m so late to this post Jim but I’ve been out of town in Yosemite for Fall colors.

@David_Haynes @Ed_Lowe Thank you.
