I got up on a perfectly clear day and drove into Yellowstone to photograph the falls and canyon. Of course, the interior of the park was under heavy overcast, which fits with the geology and it’s effect on local weather. The overcast did work well at showing off the colors and details in the canyon walls.

While the wall colors were a prime objective, I did want the river to hold it’s own visually. This view gives the walls primacy, mostly because of how much of the frame they occupy, but the river with it’s flow patterns is a strong element.

R5, 100 - 500 @ 186, 1/4 s, iso 100, tripod and polarizer. The polarizer had very little effect on the colors, but its two stop light loss got me to a shutter speed that let the faster portions of the river go white, which shows off the flow well.
Mark: One of my favorite places on the planet and so well captured here. Great conditions and a very nice comp. I like how the polarizer and your SS rendered the water. Most excellent. >=))>
Hi Mark,
I am enjoying the array of colors in the canyon walls as well the way the Yellowstone snakes it’s way through the frame. I also think it’s slightly off center placement works rather nicely. I find it amazing the multitude of trees clinging to the slopes as they eke out an existence. The details in the large version are a real treat!
Mark, what a powerful image. I was lucky to have been there years ago and recall the powerful waters migrating thru these canyon walls. And of course mother nature’s erosion factor having carved the view over the centuries. The colors are excellent overall. I cannot imagine ever having to climb out of this cavernous area…UGH!
