I’m unsure whether these are Purple or House Finches. given the relative numbers we’ve had this summer, the odds are on Purple, but I can’t see enough critical information in the field guides or photograph to differentiate them. These two hung out together long enough to give me quite a few shots. The perch is an apple tree that has the misfortune of being the closest place to hide for our feeding station. It gets very well ‘fertilized’ over the summer. I did clean up some of the leaves and removed a twig that didn’t add anything to the composition.
Any issues with the clean-up of the leaves. It looks like I missed one-should I fix it?

7DII, Sigma 150-600 C @ 600 mm,tripod with ball head and Sidekick mount, f/11, 1/1000, iso 800, manual exposure. Processed in LR & PS CC. Cropped to 3684x2634 to get rid of some really ugly leaves on the right. The background is a clump of Douglas fir trees that had their shadowed sides toward me probable 700 feet or more away. Taken sitting in a camp chair in the back yard at 8:43 am on July 13th.

They seem to be juveniles, so hard to tell. Lovely composition and great contrast between foreground and background. I would slightly brighten up the right leg (our left) of the left bird as it’s a bit muddy and looks like it might be a nice stance.
Is see the mess you are talking about. I think I would clean it up and maybe vignette that corned. I did not notice it at first but since you pointed it out its all I see now. I like the composition it appears they are discussing the weather (or maybe the poop over their head.) Exposure is spot on. Don’t you just love your backyard.
Great shot, Dennis. Like the lighting on the leaves to the left and the highlighted birds. The birds look contented which centers the eyes on them.

Hello Dennis, I agree with John that the lighting is great. The leave frame the birds on both side and the dark background really makes them stand out. Thank you for sharing.
