Specific Feedback

I used flash and am wondering how the eye looks to you all. I darkened the eye a bit. I just don’t want a flashed look.

Allen: If you hadn’t said you flashed I’m not sure one could tell. There are no obvious shadows and I think you treated the eye superbly. The perch is the perfect complement and the BG is superb. Most excellent. >=))>

Gorgeous, with the perfect perch, soft light and simple setting! Wonderful sharpness and detail. The eye looks fine, although I can’t say I’ve ever had a good look at them.

The flash is very subtle providing natural light. It is interesting that you have a well defined tiny catchlight in the eye. Rarely see that in bug photography. Big, concave diffusers produce the best surface detail on an insect’s eye. Darkening the eye worked fairly well here. Comp is very nice…Jim

Hi Allen, I’d like to commend your choice of animals. Skippers are constructed so differently from most other butterflies! I’ve noticed that many people who are not into butterflies think that skippers are actually tiny moths. I wouldn’t worry about your use of flash; the image you produced is very handsome.

Allen, I agree with the others that I can’t tell that you used a flash. Well done. Wonderful details in the Skipper and the flower with such a nice BG.

Gorgeous image, Allen. While the use of flash is invisible, that eye is awesome. It looks as if it has a pupil and gives the whole butterfly that “big-eyed” cuteness factor.

I also admired the catchlight. It’s a great shot, especially to get that smooth BG at F32, with no obvious evidence of flash. What beautiful “biscuity” colors and patterning on this skipper.

Allen, this is a great capture of this Zab. Your use of flash doesn’t show. You’ve got excellent details in both the skipper and it’s perch. The colors and angle make a very inviting photo.
