Description
We were hiking through a less travelled track that led to Roma Gorge. Roma Gorge is about 165 klms west of Alice Springs. It was hot and the flies were frustrating. We finally made it the waterhole and were greeted by hundreds of these little zebra finch. They are very social. I love how they crowded together to form the curve in the whippy branch.
Specific Feedback
I started making all sorts of layers to make the little birds stand out a bit more. Desaturating, decreasing contrast, opening up shadows in the background. And then I thought about leaving this little desert bird in the desert. How well do they blend in.
Do they blend in too well?
Technical Details
ISO 1250 70-200@200mm f11 1/1250
Border patrol to clean up half a bird and a loose stick. A very small contrast adjustment to the birds only.

Glenys: What a wonderful and delightful find. In the large version I think the birds stand out well enough. I love the different positions and attitudes on display here. Really good plane of focus management as well. Top notch shot. >=))>
Glennie, I love these finches, and it breaks my heart to see them caged. Excellent detail and varying poses of the birds, and a nice environmental BG.
Great find and lovely presentation!
Glenys, the big arch of birds is lots of fun and I like that they both stand out and blend in with the background. Catching the one taking off is a good extra bit. My wife raised these birds in an indoor aviary for many years and they are a hoot to watch.
How cool!! (Well, the idea, but not the climate! We were at Alice Springs and Uluru years ago – it hadn’t rained for 7 years and the flies were unbelievable.)
I love how the little guys are perched on that branch and the one is bailing out! And then I find the ones hiding in the corner – sweet! They show up nicely – it is a bit of a puzzle to make them out at first, which keeps attention on them as they deserve. The OOF BG is wonderful!!
A very interesting comp. Good timing on catching the one finch bailing out of the picture. Getting them all in the frame took patience and skill. Well done…Jim
