Critique Style Requested: Standard
The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.
Description
I took this picture back in September in Banff. I had this wonderful encounter with this Raven and the one picture I took has been quite successful in selling prints. I am creating a Raven journal with a few pictures throughout it, so I went back to this “photo shoot” and saw this image I realized I wanted to play with. I feel like it’s a quiet, contemplative photo of this Raven. I didn’t put this under Avian category because of the editing I did to this image. I wasn’t sure if it would qualify there.
Specific Feedback
I would just like to know if there’s anything I can do to fine tune this picture? I didn’t use the Denoise because I like the grainy look. I am just wondering what I may be missing in this picture? Should I crop in more on the right?
Technical Details
1/1000
F6.3
ISO 12800
I,of course played a lot in Lightroom to create this picture.

Hi Rikki. An interesting interpretation of a raven. There is definitely mystique and lot of lore related to this species for a good reason. This image conveys a good deal of that feeling.
P.S. There’s no real limit on the processing for the Avian forum, though some people do put heavily processed images here. The restrictions for avian are that it be a wild and free bird and preferably that there be minimal evidence of the “hand-of-man”. It’s usually recommended that birds in an obviously human environment end up here, but we don’t get too worked up over the issue. I’ll leave it up to you whether you prefer it here or there. Just let me know if you’d like me to move it.

Thanks Dennis for the explanation. Yes please, if you can move it to Avian then, that would be wonderful. I am glad you got a “feeling” out of this picture. Haha, that’s what I was going for . Have a good day!
I think this is a really interesting capture. Did you look into maybe making it a vertical crop? Seems like that could work too. Well done.

I think that the space around the bird adds to the mistique along with all of the blackness. The lore (and biology) of Ravens is fascinating and your processing does a good job of giving this view a sense of personality.
Rikki: I think you’ve captured the essence of the raven. The black background really adds to the allure of the bird. Congrats.
Works perfect in B&W. I love the tone of this image. One suggestion is maybe take the spot removal tool and clean up his beak. The feathers really shine and just a beautiful image …
