Description
I love being out in the moor early in the morning—especially in the spring, there are always particularly beautiful moments just before the sun rises. I had my camera focused on the mayflies, because I knew how beautiful they look when the sun hits them—specifically their wings. In that moment, my heart swells with joy and I feel a deep sense of happiness.

What a magical little fragment of morning. The eye does not immediately recognize what it is looking at, only that it is precious and impossibly detailed, like a relic from a jeweler’s drawer. Then the structure clicks into place: a mayfly wing, beaded with dew, every droplet catching its own tiny portion of the dawn.
The texture is the real marvel here. Warm golds and bronzes glowing through the membrane, paired with cooler silver beads strung along the edge like seed pearls. The larger droplets behave like miniature lenses, each holding its own little refracted universe, while the finer ones gather into shimmering constellations across the surface. It is the kind of detail that rewards lingering.
The composition is beautifully judged. Isolating the wing against that soft milky background was exactly the right call: no clutter, no competing notes, just the jewel and the breath of space around it. The diagonal placement gives the wing a gentle sense of suspension, as if it is dangling into the frame from somewhere just beyond view, which suits the quiet magic of the moment perfectly.
A lovely piece of seeing. Thank you for sharing it.
Absolutely gorgeous Stephanie, I’m struggling to come up with a better feedback than that of Sebastien above! The burnished appearance along with the slight grainy texture is perfect and whilst I initially thought I might have chosen to sharpen the image slightly I now think that would actually detract from the overall feeling. You’ve got this spot on as far as I’m concerned Fabulous.
Stephanie: This is really well done. I get that same sense of peace and discovery when I wander our garden early in the morning. I was wondering what insect this was and knowing it’s a mayfly increases my appreciation of the skill and vision to get this shot. Most excellent in every way. >=))>
Hi Stephanie,
What a shot ! you managed to capture nature’s gold droplets.
The composition is spot on as the wing is more magnificent by itself rather than with the full fly. It allows the colors and droplet to speak for themself without distraction.
If it was green, it could almost look like a tree leaf, demonstrating the beauty of mother nature.
no feedback needed, Great shot !
