The Avian Critiques category is dedicated to images where birds are the main subject. This category celebrates the beauty, behavior, and diversity of birds in their natural habitats.
Guidelines for Avian Images
- The primary subject of the image should be one or more birds
- Images can depict birds in various settings: in flight, perched, feeding, nesting, or engaging in other natural behaviors
- Both close-up portraits and environmental shots are welcome
- Images should prioritize the natural behavior and habitat of the birds
Ethical Considerations and Disclosure Requirements
- Images of birds baited with seed, other non-live bait, or recordings must be disclosed as such in the image description
- Photos of captive birds taken at commercial game farms are prohibited
- Photos taken using live bait are prohibited
- Photos of captive birds at zoos and wildlife rehabilitation centers should be posted in the Everything Else Gallery. When posting such images, please:
- Disclose the name of the facility where the photo was taken
- Include any relevant information about wildlife conservation and education
Examples of Suitable Avian Images
- Birds in flight showcasing wing patterns or motion
- Close-up portraits highlighting feather details or expressions
- Birds engaged in natural behaviors like feeding, courtship, or nesting
- Environmental shots showing birds in their natural habitats
- Rare or endangered bird species (with consideration for their protection)
We encourage photographers to prioritize the welfare of the birds and their habitats when capturing images.
Posting Guidelines
When Posting a Photo
- Be prepared to accept all comments - both positive and negative - in an objective fashion. Remember, it’s the photo being critiqued, not the photographer
- If there is any specific feedback you are looking for, such as comments on composition, lighting, or bird behavior, be sure to ask for it in your post
- Include relevant information about the species, location, and any interesting behavior or context for the image
- Clearly disclose any use of bait or calls as specified in the guidelines above
When Commenting on Other Photos
- Discuss the technical aspects of the image (composition, lighting, focus, etc.)
- Comment on the captured behavior or moment and its significance
- Provide constructive feedback on how the image might be improved
- Share any knowledge about the species or behavior depicted, if relevant
- Keep all comments congenial and respectful! All comments should pertain completely to the photo
