Description
I caught this self-appointed guard of our deck hummingbird feeder who was perched on a cool looking little branch of our nearby liquid amber tree in the morning light. I am endlessly fascinated by their ever changing iridescent feather colors in the light.
Specific Feedback
Does that cropping look about right?

An excellent image of this Anna’s, Dave. The seed pods of the tree dangling down add a lot of interest. One could wish the twigs hadn’t been so whitish, but that’s the nature of the tree, not the photographer.
Nice look at the hummer. I like the composition; the seed pods add interest and balance to the image.
Delightful image, Dave! Perfect head-turn to catch some of the colour. The branch and seed pods are really interesting and add a lot.
If you wanted to play with this lovely image further, you might try to lighten the area behind the head, and the tail area. Dodging the brightest areas of the branches to darken them a bit would also work well.
Really nice image!
Hi Dave. I like the idea of dodging the dark areas at the top, but just doing it around the head makes it more obvious that it was done in post processing. If I were doing it, I’d probably bring down that whole dark area on the top just a bit being careful to mask the head of the hummer. You could try selecting background in LR, remove the areas you don’t want to lighten using a brush with a very broad feather and then just pulling up the shadows in that area.
Dave, Dennis’s suggestions are good ones, as always. The whole dark area should be lightened if the image is to appear natural.
Hi Dave, the original image works for me as is but bringing down the brightness of the branch could be something to consider. Really interesting perch with the dangling seed pods. Nice details and head position on the hummer.
