Description
Costa Rica
We found several of these guys among the leaves on our jungle hikes, since the beautiful blue morpho is such a common butterfly.
This one was more accessible than most of them.
The caterpillar might seem fuzzy, but if you look closely, you’ll see the fine strands of silk around the caterpillar, as it is starting to weave it’s chrysalis.

It’s very interesting to see the caterpillar at this transforming stage, Sandy. I thought the comp. was a little unbalanced with the larva so far left, but then realized the leaf should not be cut. You did really well with the lighting, as the BG could have been - and maybe was - much brighter. Did you get any shots of the adult?
Sandy: My first thought was, “What is that?” We have blue morphos in the butterfly pavilion in the Houston Museum of Natural Sciences and I’ve had some success shooting them in the past but have not been there in several years. I very much like how you have arranged the leaf in the frame and thinks this works very well. Nice find and a superb capture. >=))>
Sandy, I have never seen one of these before, so this is really neat to look at. Yes, I see the fine strands of silk around him. Wonderfully composed, captured and presented. No nits for me.
Great photo image, Sandy. I have also never seen one of these. The color contrast came out very well and the lighting looks good. The subject is very sharp, and I like the placement in the upper left with the leaf adds to the story.
This is nicely framed, Sandy. I did notice the “softness” around it’s legs. The strands of silk show well near the lower end. It does stand out against the green leaf, suggesting that it’s poisonous to predators.
