Self Critique

I like the composition. Unlike the previous scene, there is no desaturation of the rocks. Should I delete the upper errant Columbine bloom?

Creative direction

Mountain flowers in the summer are really over the top many times. The Columbines were at peak for this session but I felt I could do a more intimate portrait in this case.

Specific Feedback

Aesthetic, emotional, and technical.

Technical Details

Canon R5 Mark II, RF 100-500 @ 100mm, f/5.6 @ 1/1000, ISO 320. Processed in Dx0 PL8 and Photoshop CC with masking and slight sharpening.

Description

The Columbines are the state flower of Colorado and although this scene was in southern Wyoming, I always try to show the delicacy of these flowers wherever I find them.

Fred, this is a fine look at this clump of Columbine. As in your previous post, the structural contrast between the flowers and the surrounding rocks sets the flowers off well, as it shows where they can grow.

I think I’d probably remove that background plant, Fred. If you’d managed to get it in focus, I’d say leave it, but it’s just close enough to being in focus without making it, that it feels like a mistake rather than a deliberate element of the composition. A wonderful setting for Columbine.

Thank you for your help with this. I am considering removal.

Fred: Until @Dennis_Plank remarked about the upper bloom being slightly OOF I was OK with it but after looking more closely I agree with him. I just used content aware fill to make it go away. The scene and comp are very pleasing and I would love to find something like this in the wild. Well done. >=))>

PS: On a separate note, site guidelines recommend sizing your images to 2000 pixels on the long side. Large images often trigger some unwanted compression effects .

It does look cleaner without it. The Snowy Range mountains west of Laramie, WY are where you need to go to find these. I’ll keep the image size recommendations in mind. Thank you for your efforts, I appreciate it.
