Candle Power

Last Keeper

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

This is inside the first order Fresnel lens in the Umpqua River Lighthouse just outside Winchester Bay and Reedsport, Oregon. The light was built between 1891 and 1894 and just celebrated 130 years of continuous service. The original lamp was an oil burner which was replaced with electric bulbs in 1934. The halogen bulbs now in use put out somewhere close to 2 million candlepower which is projected over 24 miles on a clear night. The light was automated in 1966 but apparently the last keeper has been known to reappear around Halloween each year.

Specific Feedback

Flipped the first image horizontally for comp. I had to hold the camera up into the chamber and essentially shot blind. Goes to show that even a blind squirrel can find a nut sometime.

Wow, these are exceptional! The story of the lighthouse is very interesting. The image inside the dome, with the angled light, is really stunning and a great perspective. Love the skeleton peering out to sea!

These images are really cool, Bill. Great depth of field on the first one with wonderful detail throughout. I really like the inside view of the lenses. The drone worked very well to get the proper perspective in the second image. Very good work on both.

Very interesting story and it’s a pleasure to look at the photos Bill. An excellent photograghic work.

Very cool!! Glancing at the thumbnails on the main page, and trying to look at all of them at once, I thought you had gone for a hot air balloon ride. This is even cooler! Fantastic you were able to pull off the shot! That is one heckuva lens.
