I posted this originally in Landscape Critiques but realize that it is probably better posted here.
I suppose focus stacking would have been the thing to do with this image but a) I’m too lazy and b) a breeze kept coming up and blowing things around. Because of the breeze and the low light, I had to shoot at ISO 800 so as to get a fast-enough shutter speed to keep most of the image in focus. But that also meant shooting at f/4 to get enough light. So, compromises all around but I intended this as an abstract from the get-go and hoped to be able to work around the deficiencies. When I made the image, I could see a lot of colour buried in it that I hoped to bring out in post. I don’t do a lot of this kind of photography, although I enjoy it and plan to do more. I’d love to get feedback on how it affects you as the reader – where it succeeds for you and where, perhaps, it doesn’t.
Kerry, my eyes are feasting on this, with the different colors, shapes, lines, etc. I does make for a nice abstract. I like how you placed the branches in the frame. The dark/black BG makes all of it stand out nicely. This is a very pleasing image.
I agree with Shirley Kerry, I love the purple/green colors and all of the detail in each one. Amazing what we seen when you zoom in close. Lovely capture, thanks for sharing it.
Kerry, there’s plenty of sharpness and detail here so the off bits get very little attention. The graphic nature with the strong lines, multiple strong colors and black background looks great. I find ferns hard to shoot, this will get me thinking about them again.
Kerry: This is excellent and I appreciate you sharing your thought processes. I’m a single capture guy so I sympathize with your challenges. I like this a lot. At first glance one gets the impression of a reflection with the strong horizontal line going all the way across the frame. The colors and other supporting lines are wonderful. I initially thought that if I was shooting this I would make the long line go at a more pronounced slant across the page but I think this works better as is. Really well seen and superbly captured. >=))>
PS: Images like this also fit nicely in Flora.
@Shirley_Freeman, @linda_mellor, @Mark_Seaver, @Bill_Fach. Thank you all for your kind words and support. I’m an outdoors person (mostly long stretches of wilderness canoeing with my wife). Grand landscapes can be very special but, personally, I’m trying to look deeper. It does sometimes feel strange to be standing in front of spectacular vista and aiming my camera at a twig or a leaf. Clearly there is spectacle in everything.
