Crater Dawn

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

My first full day of shooting on my Oregon trip was spent at Crater Lake. I drove up from Medford for sunrise and got there just in the nick of time to set this up. Used a little artistic AI license to make a warning sign disappear. I spent the entire day at the lake driving the complete rim. In 1986 Chrissy and I actually rode our bikes the 33 miles all the way around which for two flat land sea level cyclists was quite a feat. The drive almost wore me out! Great memories and it’s hard to believe that was almost 40 years ago.

Specific Feedback

This was one of the very first images I took with my 16-25. I wish I could have gotten all of Wizard Island in the frame but I wanted to get the entire curve of the eastern shoreline in the comp. I didn’t have time to consider a stitched set of images because of the fleeting nature of the light and I was scrambling to get set up before the sun broke the horizon. The price I paid for mis-estimating the travel time from the hotel.

I rather like this image, Bill. The warm light in combination with all of the blue tones in the image is very nice and your foreground adds some nice interest to the image. I don’t mind that Wizard Island is cut off because it’s still mostly there and it’s cone is far enough away from the edge of the frame that it doesn’t feel crowded.

Bill,

I don’t know how I feel about the FG and how it disrupts the flow of the crater’s rim. It seems like both an annoyance but also a way of causing the viewer to stop and reflect there for a moment.

Bill, I like the near/far juxtaposition of the foreground land against the distant view of the lake, island and sun just about to crest the horizon.

I find this to be a somewhat unique and interesting view of Crater Lake. I think it is nicely composed. I live a few hours from Crater Lake, have visited a number of times, and seen many people’s shots they took. It’s hard to find one that’s different.

Hi Bill,
I like the shape of the FG landscape and the way it directs me into the scene. I also think the evergreens perched there are another wonderful element in the image. The blue tones also work well and I absolutely love that warm glow on the right side of the rim. Part of Wizard Island being cut off does not bother me as I feel this has a nice balance to it as is. Very nicely done.
