Dandelion Macro

Full-frame image

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

One afternoon, weeks ago, I saw the way the light was hitting on this dandelion. I got out my macro lens and decided to get in kinda close to see what I could see. I took many photos, and the interesting thing was when I was editing and zooming in to see what frames were sharp, I started noticing all the really interesting designs inside. The first is what I cropped in to, and the second is what the full frame looked like. I spent about 15-20 minutes playing with different compositions and focuses, but I think this one showed what I liked best.

Specific Feedback

One of the things I deal with in the macro world is how much can be cropped without losing quality. My 85mm “macro” doesn’t let me get in as close as I would like. Even though there is a sharpness in the top of the pappus, it looks pixelated. Though, I was really more noticing and going for the designs underneath. Are the technical issues too distracting?

Patrick: I like what you’ve done here. Dandelions can be really fascinating subjects, especially when the head is full and in good condition like this one. I like how the flow of the central core leads to the sharp tip details. I’m not familiar with your lens but did note that it goes to 1:2 magnification. Could you use a short extension tube to get a bit closer? I use tubes with my 70-200 zoom but if I really want to get close I have a 1:1 100mm and a 200mm macro lens. I’ve very rarely used tubes with those lenses but I will stick a tele-converter on the 200 If I really want to get in close. At least with your camera you have lots of pixels to work with and for a web presentation this looks pretty darn good.>=))>

I’m not a stickler for wanting everything to be super sharp. I actually find the upper details not only sharp enough but also inviting me to look at the bottom of the image and just enjoy the fuzzy details and the miracle that dandelion seeds are! I agree with @Bill_Fach that trying extension rings might open new realms for you. Also, if you do not already do so, try setting your image capture to multiples rather than single shot as often one or more are sharper than another.

Hey, thanks so much @Bill_Fach and @JohnSnell . Yes, I think an extension tube might be a good option to try. I don’t think cost a lot, so would likely be a good investment. I’ll look into how to set for multiple shots like you suggested John. Though, considering how many images I can take of a subject, I might burn through my SD even faster. Thanks again.
