Taste of a flower

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

Had a cloudy day which provided good lighting for the bees. I also wanted to try using a 24mm extension tube on this lens, which worked pretty well for a closer focus.

Specific Feedback

Any suggestions on lighting welcome

Dean, this is a fine look at the bee and the flower it is on. It is good to experiment with different lenses and extension tubes to see how they work for you on different subjects.

Dean, you’ve got excellent detail in the bee and the flower. Extension tubes are a good way to get a bit more magnification. The increase in magnification is determined by the ratio of the extension length divided by the focal length. (If you were at 200, then your extra magnification would be 24/200 = .12. Assuming that your maximum zoom magnification is 1/3 (.33), then you’d have (1 + .12)/3 = .37 for your magnification.)

Another very nice bee image, Dean. That lens gives you plenty of depth of field which is very handy for this kind of image. The bee is nicely positioned though I kind of wish the flower on the left weren’t cut off.

As an apiarist myself I really appreciate your beautiful bee images. What wonderful polinators they are.

Once again you have the lovely browns and greens and the bee is well positioned. Maybe a little more on each side would give a little more breathing room.

Dean: I used to HATE using tubes on a zoom but with new AF technology my 70-200 with a tube has been by macro setup of choice unless I really want high mag and then the 200macro on my APS sensor DSLR is still king. The focus on the bee and the DOF you achieved is outstanding. Top notch effort. >=))>
