Dawn Egret

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

I spent a few days last week at the Sacramento NWR Complex. This one was taken very early my first day at the Sacramento site. The sun wasn’t quite above the horizon yet and it gave the Great Egret a nice look for my taste.

Specific Feedback

I’m not too sure about the width of the composition. Too much room on the left?

Technical Details

Processed in LR & PS CC. Moderate crop. Removed several stray branches on the right that didn’t do anything for me.

I like the composition. The egret appears to be looking off in the distance, so the room on the left works. Nice detail in the whites. The clouds make for a nice background.

Hi Dennis, I like the crop with plenty of room on the left. It accentuates the line of clouds we see and puts the bird in an interesting position in the frame. Nice light and exposure. Great look. Well done.

The egret chose a very nice setting. And you used it for maximum impact. The cloud line in the very soft background is a significant plus for the picture. To answer your question, I find the picture very well balanced. The open space on the left gives both the egret and we, as onlookers, something to hope for.

Hi Dennis
The overall framing is really good and the Egret have outstanding feather detail.

Why a TIFF file?

@Peter_Morrissey

Hi Peter. I take my EXIF data from my working file as it has better information than the jpg which has been downsized for the web. I prefer telling people what the crop was before that last downsizing step and I use the TIFF format for my working files. Just started doing it that way and it works for me.

Oooh nice light here. Everything is soft and the extra room adds a sense of wistfulness if that makes any sense. As if the bird is alone, but looking for something and maybe not finding it. A mate? A fledgling? Dinner? Nothing of the kind is happening here, but that’s where my brain went. Terrific over the shoulder look and the whites are gorgeous.

Dennis - really nice light and I always love rear views of birds to show the feather detail.
Nice handling of the whites, and great detail. I like that curved branch around the bird.
This comp is fine, although maybe a tad less room on the left? A vertical crop would also work well - artist’s choice!

HI Dennis
Thank you for the information. I only use TIFF’s when I export a photograph to the Nik Collection.

Hi Peter. I suppose I should do the research to see whether tiffs or dngs are better or take less memory, I’ve just never bothered.

Hi Dennis, the soft morning light is very nice. Wonderful shot of the Egret getting ready for its day My original thought was that there was just a little too much space on the left. Kind of a minor nit on the overall fine quality of the image.
