Deep Freeze

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

About four years ago, I took up photographing the ice just as a way to get me out of the house during the winter months. I really just do this for fun - for me - as a way to exercise my love of abstraction. I have edited these photos in many ways - in color, more realistic, and more abstract like this one. I do not really intend to show these formally - these are just for my to indulge my need to get lost in the abstract shape and forms of winter.

Specific Feedback

People (the general public) seem to have a a hard time processing abstraction in photography, so I sometimes wonder if I take abstraction too far. Is this the case here? Any general comments are also welcome!

Technical Details

Taken with Sony full-frame mirrorless camera, Sigma macro lens, using ambient light. I intentionally overexpose when shooting, and in Lightroom, do a black and white conversion, exaggerate contrast, and add a bit of a white vignette. ISC 100, Shutter Speed 160.

Marianne: Oh this is fine! I especially like the shapes, textures and lines. A compelling scene so very nicely composed, captured and presented. Most excellent. >=))>

Marianne, this is a great ice photo. You’ve isolated some very interesting details and a good mix of shapes in the ice. It does look like there are some reeds poking in from the bottom. Their strong line provide quite a contrast to the jumble of shapes in the ice. Personally, I’d remove them, but that’s an artistic choice. There are a couple of regions where the brightness is obscuring details that I wish I could see. While it’s true that abstracts tend to be somewhat limited in their broad appeal, they have their own audience. BTW, Ice abstracts are a personal favorite subject.

Hi Mark - Thanks for your comments and critique! I do appreciate it! Yes, If I were to ever show this image in an exhibition, I would also remove the reeds. And I will definitely take a look at the brightness issue - I hadn’t thought of that. Ice is GREAT for abstraction - and a lot of fun to capture!!
