Disappearing Act

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

I came to the end of the trail at a pair of lakes in Jasper there wasn’t much of a view due to the weather when the clouds started to clear and this mountain appeared in the distance. It was wonderful to be on one of the quieter trails and be immersed in nature with no one around. Luckily I was carrying my telephoto lens and was looking for wildlife. I liked the moodiness of the scene and kept the image a little to the darker side.

Specific Feedback

Any feedback welcome. I kept the image in color as I was thinking that it was very monochromatic already . Typically I would convert an image like this to monochrome (B&W) but preferred this version. I kept a reasonable amount of contrast but have considered increasing the highlights on the mountain.

Technical Details

1/800, f7.1, iso 100. 350mm on 200-500 mm lens. Hand held. Processed in LR reduced vibrance to make the image slightly more monochrome. Also a small amount of local adjustments to darken some of the highlights need the edges as well as reducing the highlights is some of the brightest areas to bring back some detail.

Bryan: Aren’t conditions like this magical? I very much like the subtle hints of color and think they make the image more alive than if it was pure monochrome. Wonderful capture and reminder of a wonderful moment and experience. >=))>

Hi Bryan,
I love how the clouds are cradling the mountain peak, and how you positioned it in the composition. Right on to keep the slight hint of color. I would be curious to see the mountain peak highlighted just a bit to make it more of the star.

Bryan, this works well with it’s dark, stormy mood. The peak stands out because of it’s sharpness and texture. Well seen.
