Early Frost

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

I’ve had my eye on this nearby field of teasels, hoping for an early frost before the heavy winter storms ripped them apart.

Specific Feedback

Is this crop about right, or too much stem?
I had a lot of trouble getting a good perspective. I hope this works.

Good find and timing. The proportion of stem works for me, perspective looks good, you’re basically on a level with the seed head. Background is nicely distanced from the subject, something hard to find with this environment sometimes. We haven’t had a lasting hard frost yet, but I’m looking forward to it.

With all the upward thrust of this species, I think maybe a touch more room on the top and the same off the bottom might be worth trying, Sandy. Very cool frost on this seed head and I really like the extra little tuft of frost coming off one of the spikes.

It’s an interesting subject, Sandy, and a good composition. It’s my neurosis speaking but I’d prefer for the stem to be straight, even if it was leaning when you took the shot.

Don, I think straightening the stem would make the teaasel very off-level.

I tried it and I see what you mean.

I like this one Sandy. I think the crop works pretty well. I like color better than B&W, but this really shows off the frost well in the B&W. I wonder if you could bump up the contrast a bit what it would look like.

Sandy,
This a beautiful image showing the effect of Nature - A wabi-sabi. I love the details and the colors. Agree with Dennis on leaving some space, but I also like as it is. Great find and well captured.

Great Tone and Lines in your image. Maybe a little more contrast. Maybe burn parts of the image in and maybe a small vignette. I really like the depth of field in this image. Keeping the background soft and the plant up front and sharp. Very cool !!! works great in Black and white

Sandy: Brrrr! I got over enjoying the cold when I was in Korea but this image works so well to convey the feeling. A really nice find and a superb capture. >=))>
