Eastern Bluebird

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

I decided to try for some images of the bluebird pair feeding their chicks today. It was mostly cloudy today and I took these midday. Seeing the fluffy caterpillar the female caught was a nice surprise.

Excellent look at the pair, Allen. The eye on the female really pops and the caterpillar adds a lot. Love the vibrant colors in the male. Both against a nice background.

I agree. These are very nice images. I wish we had some around here.

Lovely images of this pair! Your usual fine detail and nice BG.
Bright eyes and great caterpillar!
Wish we had bluebirds here, but we’ll be heading to our son’s in northern CA later this week, where they abound!

Excellent images of this pair, Allen. I need to set up an auxiliary perch for ours before they get going on the next brood. They’ve just been landing on the box or post (or the neighboring box). So much for fluffy caterpillars being bird resistant!

Ah bird cooperation for once. Excellent resting place to catch them before they sprint for the kids. The only thing I’ll add is that maybe adding a touch of exposure to the shot of the male would help it feel less dull than the shot of his mate. She pops more even though the light is similar and her colors more muted. That fuzzy caterpillar is great, too.

Gorgeous – what a delightful pair!! Perfect detail and colors. The females are almost prettier, with their soft colors. I always struggle with the blues on the males.

We have some starting a nest – in the worst lighting situation possible.

@Diane_Miller You might put up a perch in better light maybe 10-15 feet from their box. They’ll probably use it to stop and check for predators on their way to feed the chicks.

@Dennis_Plank, I should try… Problem is, there is a scraggly young tree about 25 ft away that they are using – it has decent cover for them and is too far away from any place I can hide to try to shoot them there. (They don’t like me!) There is a spot I can almost hide in and I put a perch at the box but it’s in deep shade (with a bright BG) until noon. Send some clouds down this way!

Great shots, Allen. This makes me miss my bluebirds. I took the nest box down. I had to move it closer to the house and they seemed nervous about that. When I checked inside I had a wasps nest so I took it down. These are excellent shots.
