Eastern Sierra Color

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

We’ve been getting big rain here in San Francisco so it’s been a perfect opportunity to go over my collection of photos. I’m astounded to report that I have 107,000 photos in my LR catalogue, all taken since 2007. I’ve been reworking old forgoten photos and it has been interesting to note that just now I am most attracted to my really colorful photos. This is one of them, taken during autumn just below Lake Sabrina.

Specific Feedback

I’ve edited this photo to represent my memory of how it actually looked in the waning light of a clear, cold early October late afternoon in the Eastern Sierra 10 years ago. Because I seem to be infatuated with colorful photos right now my question is “does this appear to be unrealistically over saturated”? I don’t think so…but I know I am in the middle of a color love fest so would appreciate your opinion.

Technical Details

400mm lens, f/16, ISO 400, at elevation 8,911 feet

Yes, but that’s to it’s credit. It looks painterly.

I don’t know about unrealistic, but it does seem a bit over saturated. But like @Igor_Doncov said, it makes it look painterly.

When I first saw the thumbnail of this image I immediately thought, 'Wow, that image is really saturated and cooked." Then I opened the image and saw a larger representation of it and while it is still oversaturated, it has taken on a very painterly feel. Yes, it looks unrealistic to me but again, this looks less like a photograph and more like a painting. In that regard, you’ve painted what I think is a beautiful memory of your day at Lake Sabrina and no one can fault you for that. And, it turns out, that being oversaturated and cooked a little bit actually made this image better than it would have been had you not been in the middle of your current color fest. I love it.
