The light brown bagworm moth (Megalophanes viciella), a species of butterfly, travels with a bag. The caterpillars build the bag from dead plant matter, which they spin together with a silk thread in a characteristic pattern.
The female moths cannot fly at all, and the males only live for a few hours.
Great subject, well captured. I am a big fan of nature/macro photos that give me a clue about the environment in which the subject is found. The three out OOF stems/leafs carry just the right amount of weight to balance the in focus subject providing symmetry and rhythm. Personally I would crop in just a little from the right to emphasize the relationships of the elements in the composition. Thanks for the amazing natural history info.
I learn something new every day - so interesting, Kathrin. I’ll know what it is if I see one of these in the summer. The base of the case could have been caught a bit sharper, but then the beautiful BG might have been less captivating. I like the composition a lot.
Mike,
You’re absolutely right about the sharpness.
Since joining NPN, I’ve been paying more attention to trying different aperture settings. I took this photo in 2024.
Kathrin, you are showing off this bit of architecture very well. You’ve got excellent details in the sides of the bag. The three leaves in the background balance your subject nicely. Your repost is a nice improvement as it removes the broken end of the middle leaf.
