Description
Gulf Fritillaries are very active in our garden in the fall. We do have the occasional monarchs passing through and some resident skippers but for the most part the fritillaries are the best opportunities. Caught this guy working over our lantana and thought it worth a shot or ten. >=))>
Specific Feedback
The butterfly was very active flitting from bloom to bloom and rarely sitting still so all the shots were handheld AF. On this one the plane of focus was just about perfect for the critter but the lantana was OOF what I consider an awkward amount. I wish it was either sharp or more blurred. Is that a deal breaker? Any suggestions for improvement?

My first impression is WOW, talk about color coordinated!! Superb focus and detail on the Fritillary, and for my taste the Lantana is optimally soft. It keeps the eye on the butterfly (not sure anything could compete) but is still identifiable. I wouldn’t change a thing!
A truly wonderful scene here, Bill. The butterfly is perfect in color, detail, and present scale in the scene. No deal breaker on the OOF area at all…
As always you could play around with various cloning approaches, content aware or even a total blurring. All are subjective ideas and may not come out as nice as the image is in it’s original configuration here…
btw: your point on the butterfly fall season item is well taken. We have seen a lot of Swallowtail butterflies and numerous caterpillars over recent weeks out at JTNP…
As Diane says, the lantana, for me too, is “optimally soft”, i.e. not competing with a butterfly in such good condition and focus. Sometimes it’s good to have the supporting actors a little bit oof, I think. Super shot.
