Frosty Winter Sunrise

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

Well, this image certainly contains lots of “leading lines”. Seriously though, in my eyes they do create a nice natural texture.

The camera was pointed straight down into the Willow Slough from the first bridge on the Wetlands Walk Trail at the Cosumnes River Preserve, California.

Specific Feedback

I sometimes get bored with images that are too “simplified”. In which case I head out into nature to get a dose of chaos and complexity to bring balance back into my life.

I’m curious to know if I’m in the minority here. Or if there are other nature photographers who are not also intimidated by chaos and complexity.

Technical Details

1/125 sec at f/20. ISO 400. FL 145 mm.

Timing was important to get this shot. Normally we don’t get a lot of frost here in the central California valley. And when we do, it melts pretty quickly once the sun comes out. In this case, the sun was already out, casting a warm glow on the bridge I was standing on. But the bottom of the slough was still trapped in blue hour because the sides of the slough prevented the sun from shining directly into the slough. For a short while, I managed to get the best of both worlds, a blue hour “frosted” with a golden hour hue.

Franz: Nice capture of the moment. It is chaotic but so much the better for it. I wish the frost was more evident but I think this would work even without. Well seen and composed. >=))>

Bill;

Mother nature engages in a lot more activities during the winter than just converting liquid H2O into solid H2O. This is especially true when it comes to flora. For what it’s worth, I often encounter this “locations that don’t have ice and snow don’t have winter” mentality. It get’s frustrating sometimes. [SIGH!]

I could have zoomed in all the way (e.g. to 400 mm) just so the individual ice crystals were visible. But then it would have been a different image. IMHO, not nearly as engaging or “textured” as the one I ended up submitting.

It pleases me that you gave the image a thumbs up. It is sincerely appreciated.

Cheers,
Franz Gisin

Hi @franz, I really like the swirly quality of this image and the delicate explosion orange, pinks, purples and blues. I too am a fan of the wonderful chaotic ways nature arranges itself and it real joy when someone shares an image that captures it so well. Lovely, well seen work.

Franz, the “vast” swirly view looks good to me. I also like how I can tell where the sun has hit and what’s still in the shade.

@franz , I find the “chaos,” as you term it to be delightful, especially as it has such depth to it. And, yes, as others have said the lighting is just gorgeous.
