Frozen leaves

It is not only when the plants are in bloom and green that it is possible to take interesting pictures. You can find exciting details, shapes, patterns and colors even in dead plants. This picture was taken in the compost at home in my garden. The first really cold winter night had struck and beautiful patterns of frost formed on leaves and branches. After spending an hour photographing leaves on the ground, I had captured several hundred images. After sorting through the pictures, I found this one which is a favorite from this day. I am very attracted to the textures, the frost and the earthy colors in the picture.

Nicely done! Frosty leaves are some of my favorite subjects, too. The darker processing gives this a real dead of winter feel even though the leaves aren’t buried in snow. Plus compost piles stay warm longer so may not have snow for a while. A well organized shot and beautifully processed. Did you use a tripod or handhold? I ask because the ISO is slightly high for tripod work so I assume you were handholding. Sometimes it’s easier.

thanks for you positive feed-back, appreciated! Yes the image is taken handhold so that is why I had to increase the ISO a bit.

Johan, this is a fine collection of frosted leaves. From experience, I know how hard it is to find a good composition in shots like this. You’ve done very well here, the mix of the two brighter leaves and all of the frosted edges fills the frame with interesting bits to look at.

thanks a lot Mark for your comment and I am happy you liked the composition which is not always easy to get right!

Johan, this is a fine image of leaves with frost on them. I am just enjoying the scene. I know it isn’t easy to get a shot like this, but you nailed this one. I could see this image used for a puzzle. Well done.

Beautifully composed and processed!! I love the tonalities with the sparking highlights and the soft colors in the dark tones. My only slight nit would be to burn down the stem exiting the bottom of the frame.

Johan: I’m a little late to this party but this is an exceptional image. I really like the color palette and the overall comp. Well seen and superbly presented.>=))>

Johan - I too am attracted to dead/dying leaves - the tonality in this is beautiful. And the composition is great. Great shot!

I am very happy that you liked the image Amy!

These type of images a re a lot harder to pull off than they look, but you succeeded admirably here. Shooting hundreds of images is worth it if this the end result. The mosaic of colors and texture here is just wonderful. I especially like the blue/dark brown of the leaves in the center and upper right. Great work on this one Johan.

I do think @Diane_Miller makes a good suggestion about burning down the bright branch in the bottom center.

Very nice, almost to the point of being surreal.
