Geological changes in days

Canary Springs at Mammoth is one of my favorite sites to visit. Imaging my astonishment when a return visit on Saturday showed a dramatic reduction in the flow rate from a visit two weeks earlier.

Little if any flow down the slope: Nov 13

Lots of very hot water and mist: Oct 31

The first view shows the top of the springs including some of the terraces seen in the second view. Note that there’s no water standing in the terraces. In view 2, there’s lots of water standing in the terraces. The story at Mammoth is that the total flow has stayed nearly the same over decades, while where it flows from changes rapidly.

Love the background in the top one. A contrast in geology and feel. Real nice look at this area.

Mark: Wonderful scenes both and I really envy you the opportunity to visit often. I’ve been to Mammoth on every visit to Yellowstone but haven’t really worked it effectively. You’re making me rethink my priorities for the next trip. Marvelous subject superbly presented. >=))>
