Description
It has been very humid with high temperatures in the 90’s which is ideal for lightning bugs (Lampyridae). I found this one perched on a vertical grass stem grooming itself while waiting for the sun to set. Overall, I found about 50 of this species near the Duck Pond.
Specific Feedback
I gave this a small crop to take some off from the bottom of the frame. How do you like this comp? I recropped the image to make the subject less centerred and removed some dust spots that were evident in the BG.

Beautiful image of this guy, Jim. I remember these with fondness from my youth, but we don’t seem to have any out here. After my parents retired, they’d spend the summer on a lake in the Kalamzoo/Grand Rapids area that had tons of them and they really put on a show the few times I visited there.
Hi Jim, very nice rendition of this guy. We are starting to see them in my neck of the woods. Wondering about taking a tad off the bottom to move the bug off center. Very nice image either way. Looks like there are a few sensor spots that could go.
Jim: @Dennis_Plank almost took the words out of my mouth. We had them in southern Indiana where I grew up but I don’t recall seeing them anywhere else in my travels and certainly not here in Texas. I think your comp is just fine and thanks for bringing back memories of a simpler and gentler time. >=))>
Jim, this does bring back memories. I used to catch them and put them in a coke bottle for light to ride my tricycle! They really didn’t give off that much light, but I was trying.
Such nice details in the bug, and a wonderful BG. Really nice shot of a beloved and memorable insect that I just don’t see much of anymore.

Jim, we’re getting lots of flashing after dark here in MD. Notably more that in the last couple of years. You’ve got excellent details here. Now if only there were a way to get one to light up for the camera…
