Ginko on the Rocks

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

This was taken with a Samsung 4G cell phone. I really loved the golden ginko color against the rough rock surface.

I see the attraction for sure. Ginkgo leaves are so beautiful and sort of iconic as a nature motif. I think two things might improve this - if you had moved in to just the right side of the branch eliminating the heavy diagonal on the left, and if there could be some more color separation between the rock and the leaves. They are harmonious and so it works on that level if that’s what you’re going for.

Ed: I see Kris’ points but I really like this. Nice find and a good solid capture. It continues to slip my mind that I have a pretty competent camera in my phone so good on you for using what you had available. Well done. >=))>

Interesting, Ed. With the depth of field you got from the cell phone, both the foreground and background are in crisp focus and my eye keeps moving back and forth. Both are fascinating. I do find myself wishing the diagonal branch in the upper left weren’t there, but other than that, I really like this image, though I know it’s far from a conventional approach. If you wanted to make people focus more completely on the ginko leaves, you could desaturate the rocks a bit, but this presentation works for me.

@Kris_Smith, @Bill_Fach, and @Dennis_Plank, I really appreciate your thoughts on this. I tried to clone out that diagonal branch, but just am not happy with the results. It just was where it was. Too close to try to get around it at a different angle. Thank you.
