I cannot be certain of this little guy’ s true identity. I think he is in the Acrida family of “slant-faced grasshoppers.” The challenge called for character and personality. I reckon he’s got both.
I’ve noticed a few spiders in the challenge. Are they really insects?
Glenys: What a great find and while it has a face only a mother would love the expression is indeed delightful. I like the way the BG is rendered as well. I can also see this presented as a portrait 4:5 with less on both sides but this works for me as is. Nicely done. >=))>
Glenys, he is just too cute, the way you caught him peaking up at us like that. I also love the color palette. All the different shades of brown is really nice. I too could see a vertical but certainly fine as is too.
What a great shot! I’d crop this more from the top and the left & try to eliminate the gray area at the back, so that it’s just the spider and the gorgeous background creating a harmonious, minimalistic image. And you’re right–your comment made me realize that spiders are not insects. So I’m one of those who’s guilty of making that mistake for the challenge this week.
Very cool portrait of this creature! And I’m pretty sure that “the rock” is Uluru!! When we were there (way back in the last century) we were told it hadn’t rained in 7 years, but there were armies of flies.
Your 'hopper does show personality, with that cocked head and long face. I like how sharp the foreground is and how it’s colors blend with the background.
Thank you @canan and @Diane_Miller and @Mark_Seaver ! Yes. Diane, it is Uluru. I like the suggestions of cropping, but I will always remember where I took this photo of the little grasshopper. One of my wishes is to see the rock when it’s raining and that doesn’t happen very often. The flies are there rain or shine.
I missed this one and like the look the hopper gives to the viewers. The BG says Australia and I can see why you left the rock in the comp. I like this as presented, but I al;so like @Bill_Fach 's recommendation for a 4x5 crop,lJim
