This Great Blue Heron’s nest was quite high in a dead cypress. If you look carefully, right under the neck you can see a small fuzzy head of one of her chicks.

Nice detail and exposure, Chris. This scene is tough to compose and the image feels a little unbalanced to me, but I’m not sure there’s anything you can do about it. Maybe try a 4x5 vertical to accomodate the dominant trunk of the cypress.
Then the GBH becomes too insignificant to the scene.
This is the only possible recrop to the scene that works for me and even it is a bit on the sketchy side.
I like the recrop. To my eye it feels better balanced and puts more emphasis on the Heron.

Love these birds, and I try to visit a rookery each Spring. I do like the slight recrop; basically just got rid of some unnecessary sky. Very sharp and I like that you included plenty of environment, which supports your story of Spring nest building.
