Grooming Nutria - Recropped

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

This nutria was cleaning up after a swim in the weeds as it was starting to feed on the greens along the bank. This was at the Ridgefield NWR in South Central Washington State. These invasive pests had wreaked havoc on the canal banks several years back, but they seem to be better controlled now a days.

Specific Feedback

It was extremely bright, especially along the canal banks in the middle of the day. I tried to calm down the glare in post processing. I welcome your thoughts and your recommendations for this and any future opportunities such as this one.

Technical Details

Canon R5, f10, 1/320s, iso 500, 100-500+1.4tc at 700 mm, cropped for composition.

Funny, when I saw this I thought, “I wonder if this was taken at Ridgefield.” I’ve imagined making the pilgrimage there just to see if I could find this critter, which I’ve never seen.

Though it’s invasive, I really appreciate that you were able to get such an open and clear shot of it, Ed. The pose is nice, and that line of leafy plants along the bottom adds a nice boundary that helps the subject pop from the background even better.

I do think a crop from the right and along the top could help the comp a bit: because the nutria is curved and facing down toward the left corner, less empty space above and right would help the viewer’s eye flow in that natural direction to explore the rest of the frame.

Thank you very much @Max_Waugh. I’ve made the suggested crops and I like it a lot better. I appreciate your wildlife guide to Yellowstone that I picked up earlier this year. I ended up focusing mostly on the Lamar Valley and the area between Mammoth and Tower Junction with great bear, bison, antelope, wolf, deer, crane and coyote sightings to name a few.
