While watering Jenny’s dahlias, I found an interesting noctuoid moth and dashed into the house to get my rig. Unfortunately, I was not able to find the moth, but was rewarded with a small robber fly with prey. I was only able to get a couple of shots before it flew off to dine in solitude.
Feedback Requested
This was a small robberfly so I did a significant amount of cropping to get the comp that I wanted. I also lowered the saturation of greens and yellows. The second version is a compromise from the original with a slightly warmer temperature. What do you think about the comp and color balance?
Jim, you’ve got outstanding detail in the fly and it’s perch. I slightly prefer the original version since the fly stands out slightly better from the surroundings. Either will work when their not being compared side-by-side.
Jim, I agree with @Mark_Seaver that I prefer the original best, but I would have been totally satisfied with either had that not been together. The details of the Rober Fly and it’s lunch is really excellent. I just can’t think of anything to improve it. Great shot!
Jim: These are fearsome critters and if I recall you’ve gotten some good shots of them before. This is a terrific capture and a testament to your skill at being able to set up quickly and take advantage of the moment. Me three on preferring the original but this is great in either iteration. >=))>
Wonderful capture - the original emphasises the blues in the fly but the warmed version is also wonderful.
I have played a bit with the crop and darkened the background and cloned out the brown at the very top in the background - all of which you may like or hate…
