Hexagonia tenuis (Honeycomb Polypore) is a common enough little mushroom that seems to do well in dry periods as well as damp. The ladybug graced my presence at the right time.
Holee. Expletive deleted. Cow. This is wonderful!! Is that ladybug another of your Southern Hemisphere specialties? The gills of the mushrooms are just gorgeous and perfectly lighted, and the BG is wonderful! One tiny nit – I wonder about removing the small light diagonal thingie near the LL corner?
Ha! As soon as I posted the image here I saw the little thingie LL corner. I’ll get rid of it. The OP now replaced with thingie removed.
The polypore mushrooms have tough leathery fruiting bodies and always grow on “wood” whereas the gilled mushrooms have fleshy bodies and grow directly into the ground…occassionly on wood.
Great focus here, Glennie. The lady bird is posing beautifully. For a different version, you could crop from the left and clone out the remaining bit of the left-hand fungus to concentrate on the right-hand one - with its star of course. Two for the price of one. But this is lovely as is, and the BG suits it to a T.
Glennie, the warm browns of the wood, the mushrooms and the lady bug make a stunning contrast to the greem background. The details in the pores is an excellent addition as well.
Glennie: I don’t have any fungi images but I’m really enjoying this week’s challenge. This is awesome enough just of the mushrooms from this POV but your party crasher raises this to a whole nuther level as we say in Texas. Great find and an even better capture. >=))>
