Hooded Mergansers ritual breeding preening

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

I was photographing pairs of Mergansers and watching mating behavior in very early morning fog and mist and had to shoot at high ISO and not a fast shutter speed. Seeing this behavior was only able to get 2 shots off but surprised in the results.

Specific Feedback

Have others seen this type breeding behavior with the effect of a "bird raft " ?

Technical Details

Shot with Sony A-1 300mm lens and 2 x extender at f5.6 and 1/1000 sec ISO3200 ,sharpening and
noise reduction Topaz

Larry, this is excellent. The female is a bit soft - F10 or so would have been better - but, still, the positions and the co-preening activity is marvelous. The bit of reflection adds a lot. I like the comp too. I’d be delighted with this shot as is!
A bit of selective sharpening to the female may help a bit. The A1 can handle much higher ISO’s excellently.
Very fine image!

I haven’t seen this behavior, Larry, but it’s an excellent image. As @SandyR-B noted, the A1 can handle a lot higher iso. It looks pretty noisy coming out of camera, but if you get the exposure right, modern noise reduction software can easily handle it.

Nice behavioral image Larry. Love the corresponding poses of these two and the overall mood of the photo. Agree with the advice above on techs and noise reduction. I use DXO Pure Raw 4.

Sandy
I have used higher ISO 12,800 on this Bobcat shot and Topaz sharpen and De Noise so next time will try higher f stop. Thanks for offer but not really necessary but will try DXO
Thanks for your feedback.
Larry

Hi Larry
Great mating behavior, DXO will clean the photo much better than Topaz.
They have 30 day free trials.
