Hoverfly on Waterlily

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

I was sitting by my pond watching the young Green Frogs sit, when this hoverfly came visiting. I would occasionally land on one of the lily blooms. Even at nearly life size magnification, the little fly (maybe 3-4 mm long) didn’t occupy much of the frame, but I thought the subtle colors and brightness of the petals made for interesting surroundings as they contrast with the yellow flower center and dark water. Interestingly enough the fly was quite shy and flew off when I moved to focus and shoot the camera, but kept coming back. Eventually, by moving very slowly after it landed, I was able to get a couple of photos.

Specific Feedback

My idea is to use the colors and shapes in the oof environment to illustrate one small aspect of the natural world.

Technical Details

R5, 180mm macro, 1/40 s, f/8, iso 800, tripod.

Very cool, Mark. these things don’t cooperate very well so I applaud your patience. Interestingly, this is one of those images where the smaller image shows the environment better. In the larger image it tends to look much more abstract. Great job on the focus on the fly.

Mark, the composition placement with the lily bloom and the hoverfly in the lower right area works perfectly. Also the detail on the larger version of the fly itself is excellent… :sunglasses:

Mark: Your patience and persistence paid off nicely. The dark lily center pulls my eye a bit but I think it balances the hoverfly nicely. Well done. >=))>
