I'm Hungry!

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

Lesser Black-backed Gull chick at Sandy Point in Stonington, CT beach in July. Quite a colony out there and the gulls were very vocal about my appearance. It will take this little guy 4-5 years to reach adult plumage.

A very nice image of the young gull, Jim. I like the open mouth. The background is quite suitable, but the upper half of it has some really fine streaking slanting up and to the right. I’ve seen similar stuff in backgrounds now and then, including some of my own images. If you can put the gull on another layer or mask it out, a light blur brush can alleviate that.

Wonderful bird shot with a great title. I agree with Dennis Plank about the “scratchiness” at the top. Would denoising help reduce this? The expression on this chick makes the image for me. its pink mouth contrasting with the black beak speaks hunger. i fussed a bit adding some contrast and vignetting around the edges and desaturated the blue as I think the blue shadow is distracting. You have a wonderful image here with nice detail in the texture of and spots on the head and body. Terrific!

@Larry_Greenbaum and @Dennis_Plank, thank you for your encouraging words and thoughtful comments. Yes, the streaks and scratches near the top are disconcerting and I’ve noted it in other images as well. Can’t decide if its a lens or sensor issue. Regardless, I’m going to see about cleaning it up a bit by trying the methods you both suggested.
