Kestrel with Breakfast

This guy initially flew overhead and I thought it was a bird with nesting material. It landed about 250 feet away and I saw the nesting material moving. He wound up eating just the head for some reason and then flew off dropping the snake. Maybe it was his second breakfast.

Technical Details

OM systems OM-1 + 150-400+1.25x (500mm). 1/2000 at f5.6, ISO 640. Heavily cropped to around 1700 pixels on the long side - as posted. I used Lightroom brushes to lighten the dark areas of the bird. Photoshop was used to clone out some errant pine needles.

Hi Steve, Great catch. I photographed a Kestrel eating a Vole a couple of days ago. Pretty gruesome really.

I like how you’re not showing the actual eating, but a look around. Nice. Thanks for sharing.

Just a friendly reminder. This image is in the Showcase. No critiques allowed.

Oh, so sorry, Steve. I did not realize this was Showcase. I’ve edited my comments.

Best regards,
David

Thank you for sharing. I’m glad I opened this up to large view, because I didn’t realize he had a meal.
