Larch Spotlight with repost

Revised version:

Original Post:

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

This is from the same lake as my last post. The sun has just begun to light up the peaks as it hit this group of larch. I liked the spotlight view so used a longer lens for this image.

Specific Feedback

All comments are welcome. My primary concern is the depth of the shadows. I like that they partially frame the image, but are they too dark?

Steve, I don’t think the shadows are too dark. I might even suggest to go a step further and make them darker so as to better frame the image. I love the blue cast from the shadows as well. the dark green pines in the lower right corner as they are darker and help to frame the image. I find my eye wandering/zigzagging through the foreground rocks and up that crevice out the top of the frame. You certainly hit peak colors for those larches. Very nice!

I really like this… a lot! Every time I see that classic warm/cool colour combination - here the golden larches and the blue shadows, it makes me smile. And no, I don’t think the shadows are too dark at all.

The only thing I’m unsure about is the light rocky slope in the upper right corner. I wonder if the image might feel a bit more balanced if you cropped that area out… maybe even to almost a square. I tried it quickly in Photoshop, and I think it works nicely, though of course that’s subjective.

Hi Steve,
For my tastes the shadows are not to dark; in fact I could see them being just a little darker. It certainly looks like you caught the larches at their peak color with those vibrant yellows. While I quite like your original image I think the crop suggested by @Tom_Nevesely elevates an already wonderful image another notch as it places more of an emphasis on the combination of yellow and blue tones in the scene. Very nicely done.

@David_Haynes, @Tom_Nevesely and @Ed_Lowe, thank you for your comments and suggestions! I added a new version after slightly darkening the shadows and cropping as recommended. Tom, thanks for the crop suggestion. I was concerned about the balance and your suggested solved that concern quite well.

Lovely catch Steve and the repost looks great! You caught some great larch color, but I bet you didn’t know this:

Thanks John! That Instagram post is very entertaining. Maybe next fall I can join him as a larch painter. I’ll be sure to take his drink of choice as well.
