The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.
Description
This was my first good time photographing long billed curlew at Great Salt Lake. Usually I see them in the tall grass and they’re too far away and I can’t get a good image. There were a couple of them out on the edge and they were fairly tolerant. I called this the playa, but there’s supposed to be water there.
Specific Feedback
I kept this pretty desaturated, soft, and light, I hope it works. (I actually think there’s some heat distortion affecting the background, please let me know if this looks too crappy.)
Technical Details
Nikon Z8+180-600, DX crop, f 6.3, 1/1600, ISO 1600

Looks fine to me, Julie. I like the idea of keeping the Curlew small in the frame and tucked down in the corner. You might play with cropping from the top, maybe even down to a semi-pano, as the lighter colors at the top of the image tend to pull my eye up there and there’s no detail up there. The bushes(?) in the background do have a bit of a heat haze feel to them, which is very appropriate.

Thank you, Dennis! I will play around with the crop as you suggested. Much appreciated!
Hi Julie, this is a home run. The off-center framing and the overwhelming sense of minimalism are perfect. Of course, you could experiment with framing the background differently, but I like it the way it is. It’s always a pleasure to see negative space used so effectively.

Hi Julie, wonderful use of negative space. Love the wide scene with the distant structure. Placement of the bird looks good and adds an artistic flair. Well done.

@russ_carpenter and @Allen_Sparks Thank you so much for your thoughts, I appreciate hearing from you. I was definitely aiming for the negative space, I could have stopped down and gotten more background in focus, but I think with the heat it works better this way. Thank you!
