Morning Ferruginous

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

I captured this friendly guy one morning not long ago. The ferruginous are my favorite hawk and they’re only around in certain lower elevation areas in the Winter. I always look forward to finding them.

Specific Feedback

He/she was angling to its right and looking left causing me to center it in the frame. I also decided to keep the original uninteresting BG. Does it work as is?

Technical Details

Z9, 1/4000th, f 7.1 450mm, ISO 1250, hand held, cropped to 1881 x 2081

This is another great image Dave. I really like that pale eye and the look you’re getting from this hawk. The chest looks soft and downy in a very detailed sort of way. I love the little spots and streaks on the lower sides and head too. I’m still not convinced about the crop in this one. You have a nice pose with most of the bird oriented to the left side and the head turned hard to the right. I would think about maybe adding more canvas to one side or the other to move it slightly off center for a stronger composition IMHO.

Excellent color and detail, very nice head turn and pose. I think white plumage towards the chest area could Have the highlights lowered. I also agree that more space on the right side of the picture would give the bird up something to look into.

Hi Dave, nice capture with fine details and great look at the eye. Agree with moving the bird to left of frame with more room on the right to gaze into.

Great pose and I love the side-lighting, Dave. I would pull down the highlights on the our left side of the bird a bit.
