Mystery Path (+rework)

I darkened the area with the branches on the right, upper side. Right, it looks better now, thank you, Ed

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

This is an alley where I walk quite often with my dog. A river is quite close and in spring you get often a foggy and mystery scene in the morning. It looks like the alley is leading you into the unknown where you even could disappear.

Specific Feedback

I used the tree on the left as a frame and to balance the trees/bushes on the right. On that specific spot is a small open area on the left which gave me the opportunity for a light area, so I could keep the trees darker. was that a good idea? Any feedback and/or suggestions are welcome.

Yes, that was a great idea. I think you have terrific compositional balance because of that dark tree trunk on the left side. You also get that sense of a dark path leading to some light in the background and you would not have that had you chose not to use that tree. It would simply be an open path that you fall off on the left side.
I really love the little zig zags on the trail and the door of fog at the end of the road. Being able to see those silhouetted trees in the backgroun on the left side is a nice treat. You’ve got a very moody and compelling image, Ralf. Nicely done.

Hi Ralf,
Moody and mysterious, I love this! Good call on cropping the tree on the left side as that helps to direct the viewer down that twisting dark gloomy pathway towards the light. It is not readily apparent in the smaller version, but I love the figure in the light at the end of the tunnel. It is both sinister and uplifting as the mind tries to decide which emotion to trust. My only suggestion would be to darken or remove some of those areas of sky about 2/3rds of the way up along the right edge of the frame. Stunning image!

Very nice composition, you framed the scene superbly. A great combination of blacks, whites and grey areas as you move through the image. The balance between the heavier tree trunks and the delicate branches and trees on the left is also quite nice. The person at the far end of the path it the cherry on top. Beautiful image!

Thank you very much all!!!

A beautiful, mysterious image, Ralf. Everyone above has said what I’d say on this one, so I’ll just say that I really enjoy this one.

Thank you, Dennis!!

I do love a dark b&w! I really like this. To me the darks could be a little lighter without loosing too much of the darkness. Maybe even darken the top of the canopy to balance out the dark path in the front…which I really like! As is, it is a really compelling image and I like it a lot!

Terrific mood. The fog is awesome. Great job on the edge artifacts; those spots were distracting. The curves in the path, the placement of the trees, are just lovely.

I would suggest perhaps sharpening the distant figure ever so much. I think it’s very cool that it’s back there, but one must hunt for it. I think you could help it stand out a bit.

Thank you very much!!

I have nothing to add but I like this.

This is highly emotional and full of mood. I like the composition as well. My only preference would be that the blacks weren’t crushed as much as they are. I don’t mean that they should be lighter. I mean that they should contain greater tonal range. But this seems to be purposely done so perhaps it’s a preference, a stylistic preference. The image also seems cool, as opposed to neutral, and I think that fits well for the subject matter.

Thank you very much!!
The trees were dark already but I love to crush dark areas. I love the painter Caravaggio (among others), he used this strong light/dark contrasts. I don´t know if it inspired me or i loved that stye before and that´s why I love him.

Hi Ralf
Your slight rework on the area towards the URC is the finishing touch for me.

I love images like this: The moody atmosphere, the narrow path, the potential for darkness and danger, but also the calm reality of a lone figure making its way through life. Maybe I went a bit far, but when everything critique-wise has been said, I like to just free associate on what it evokes in my mind. Projection? Interpretation? Who knows, but it gives you one story for this, and you can decide if it needs a tweak on that basis.

I really enjoy this one.

I’ll echo Ralf. Wonderful mood with the black and white, fog, and tall/narrow format. I love what the lone figure adds to the scene.

I too prefer more tones in the shadows, but I respect your artistic choice.

Ralf !!! I really like the Composition and Tone in your image !!! The darkness and the light is so Good. !!! I would not change a thing. Well DONE !!! Perfect in B&W..

I too love the zigzag path, the light at the end of the tunnel, and the tree that frames the scene on the left.

Thank you all!!

Marylynne, I love also thoughts like you mentioned. When it happens to me, I really enjoy these thoughts and I keep looking on these pictures for quite a time and often.

This is very nice.
Love the overall mood of the scene, and your framing.
