Nautilus

Image Description

I thought I’d seen it all after The Wave (in terms of wild desert formations), until the Nautilus. Not very Large in acreage, but astonishing in its shape. Really fun to photograph (& fun to slide down it’s natural slide ;<). This was my favorite B&W verison. The deserts of southern Utah are endless sources of fun with textures and shapes.

I wanted the tonal values to lead the eye into the slide. Does it work?

This does look like a worthy follow-up after you think you’ve seen it all! Interesting to not be completely sure of the scale, but iy you can slide down it, that’s a clue. The composition gives a lovely swirl or vortex feeling. My first thought was to wonder about more detail in the lightest tones, but that would diminish the swirl. Amazing capture!

Thank you Diane. Yeah the scale isn’t making it as part of the story, is it? Guess it’s more of an abstract…. I think I’ll go back to see if I got any shots that could include the scale somehow.. Thanks again. -Connie

Connie, the sense of swirling stands out. I feel like there are two pictures here, the brighter 3/4 on the right and the dark 1/4 on the left. That has me wondering how some mid-tone dodging in the left 1/4 would look?
