On The Way Home

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

I think this scene was probably the quickest setup I have ever had while capturing an image. While driving back home on Route 48 from Blackwater Falls SP in WV, this rainbow suddenly appeared in front of us. I slammed on the breaks and quickly pulled over onto the shoulder of the road. I asked Mike to get my tripod out while I retrieved the camera out of the bag. I was able to get a vertical as well as this horizontal before the rainbow had faded away.

Specific Feedback

Since this all happened so quickly I didn’t have much in the way of time to settle on a composition. Does this work for you?

Technical Details

Nikon Z 7, Nikon 24-200 @ 140 mm, f 11 @ 1/10 sec, ISO 200, Kase magnetic CPL, cable release & tripod.

I think the foreground is a beautiful match for the rainbow colors. I also find that all of the curves in the hills are a great match for the rainbow. I think I even see a second rainbow desperately trying to poke out of the hills as well. This is very tranquil. It’s very sharp as well. The light is dappled across the scene and I think I would call this image serendipity! You were definitely in the right place at the right time. Well done, Ed.

Ed, it’s just a peaceful image to me without to much form all a bit round. Nice and quiet . well made.

Pretty cool for a quick grab shot. I quite like it.I like the beautiful side lit areas on the hilltops. Maybe a little dodging would bring them out a little more. Simple but effective composition. Best we could have hoped for under the circumstances.

It feels slightly left heavy to me, as if the rainbow is pushed out of the image a little. It might be worth cropping a little off the left, but what I really want to see is that vertical.
