This on a small vernal pond that had partially thawed in our latest warm spell but the edges in some places had refrozen overnight leaving the particularly characteristic crystal formations of new ice.

My bet is far fewer reflections from the ice. I tend to not use polarizers in such situations because I love the reflected light, off both ice and water. But I’ll give it a try next week when I’m back out again…with more cold weather after tomorrow’s rain.
Fun to see Mark Seaver’s post this afternoon with two ice photos, both with polarizer but tweeked to show differences in reflected light. "Here are two views of my pond ice, where I adjusted the polarizer to control the blue sky reflection off the ice. " I’ll def give it a try the next time conditions are good.
The texture here is great. The lines in the ice evoke for me the veins in a dried winter leaf and I think through the ice we see leaves trapped in the water (?) - nice echo.
@CharlesV , yes, they are leaves. This is a vernal pond so the leaves are always there and the water collects on top of them. Somewhere under them are frogs and salamanders just waiting for Spring!
