Pastel Maya Reef Abstract

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

While vacationing on the Riviera Maya, I’d love to walk to the beach every morning to watch the sun rise over the sea, and play with hand held long exposures in early morning light for soothing abstract effects such as this high key scene of the beautiful Caribbean Sea washing over the Maya Reef.

Specific Feedback

I’ve greatly appreciated the feedback from the group here, particularly on more abstract scenes as I’ve struggled with my confidence in sharing these types of images. But I’d really like to develop a strong portfolio of soothing nature abstract scenes. I especially enjoy photographing the dynamic nature of water. For me, these images are about subtle use of color and interesting patterns, and more often than not, I push up shadows and exposure for a high key effect. Not sure if this image is simply too boring or if it resonates with anyone. Thank you.

Technical Details

I don’t find this boring, Beth. My reaction to it is a bit less than peaceful, however. The turbulent looking center reminds me of storm clouds for some reason. If you have the pixels, I’d also consider moving that feature more off-center as I think it would make for a more interesting composition.

Beth, I don’t think it’s boring. The colors play a key role. They’re not the colors I would expect and that engages my attention. The peach/orange at the bottom goes well with the blues.

I like Dennis’ suggestion that you move the turbulent water off center a little if that’s feasible, but it’s not a deal point.

Sharing abstracts can be unsettling but I hope you keep it up.

Not boring in any way! Lovely shapes and colors and an intriguing balance between peaceful yet strong motion. It does remind me of storm clouds! I agree with @Dennis_Plank and @Don_Peters on some decentering. that some crop from the left and bottom could be an interesting comparison.

Beth, this is really lovely. I also do not see peace; rather a turbulent stormy sea.
The colours are exquisite and the bit of reddish sand sets off the colour of the wave well.
Excellent image, and congrtas on a fine EP!
