Peek-a-Boo

Critique Style Requested: Standard

Description

I have a long love affair with the lighthouses on the Oregon coast and Yaquina Head is one of my favorites. Some of my drone shots from the ocean side are at the top of my list but I liked this view from the beach below the light just showing the lens enclosure. The beach is actually made up of rocks ranging in size from tennis ball to bowling ball and as the surf recedes there is a cacophony of rolling boulders that I could listen to for hours. >=))>

Specific Feedback

I was tempted to AI a few more clouds in the sky but decided against it. Your thoughts?

Bill, I like the “surprise” that the tip of the light provides,…way up on the cliff. The splash in the surf, lower left is also good and there’s interesting shapes and colors in the rocks along the bottom. As we use AI to “improve” our photos at some point (a decision that we each must make) the photo becomes an AI photo, not something shot by an individual photog…

Hi Bill, This was a drone shot, right? Cause it looks like a pretty dramatic and dangerous place to be standing. I enjoy the image, but am left wanting more. More ocean, more breaking waves and surf. I do like the peek a boo spire and deck of the light. I would be more engaged in the scene if I saw more of the rocky shore and caverns. Having said that, yes, I can almost hear the surf rumbling with the rocks one of my favorite oceans sounds.

A second note that I forgot, I am not in favor of using AI to add something, like clouds, or an extra shrub or plant to add balance into an image. I will of course do use AI to remove something to clean the image up for a better a presentation. In my mind there is a difference between the two…adding and subtracting . Good ask.

Stephen: This was a normal shot. There is a stairway down to the beach and a strip about 30-45 feet wide depending on the tide. I do have some landscape orientations but from the limited vantage point there was more surf but also more dull sky that would take up too much real estate in the frame. Here’s my favorite drone shot of the light.>=))>

Amazing there is a short beach down there. The drone shot depicts the area beautifully, Thanks.

How amazing! I love the rocky beach and the description you have given.

Looking up the cliff to see the lighthouse is the icing. I think this is a perfectly crafted image with that beautifully balanced diagonal cliff face. I like the separation between the mid ground and the background headland. Lots of energy in the crashing wave adds a bit of drama. My only suggestion or really just a thought, would be to see if there is a version that includes a smallish diagonal gradient burn from bottom right. And that seagull! More icing.

AI is becoming such a topic. I try to avoid it, but I will clone, composite and refine almost all my images.

Drones have opened up so many new landscapes for us.

Hi Bill,
Peek-a-boo is right as this is certainly a unique and different take on this lovely lighthouse. Your vantage point looks as though you would need to be aware of the tide changes because there does not appear to be a lot of real estate between the cliff and the ocean. The perched seagull was a nice find when opening up the large version. Everyone is different, but I personally would never use AI to fill in a sky. If I didn’t get the sky I wanted on the first try that would just be my incentive to try again. If I filled in a sky using AI I feel my photograph would stop being a photo and become art. I like technology, but not AI.
