Pinacate Beetle on Golden Yarrow

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

Our son’s garden in the Eastern Sierras is full of butterflies, bees, and various other bugs. This cooperative fellow was making his way slowly enough across a head of yarrow to allow a couple of quick shots
I cloned out a faint stem that seemed distracting

I like that the beetle is so sharp without strong reflection, and facing into a pretty sharp part of the flower head. I love that no stalk is visible, so it seems to be exploring an island in a green sea. I’d just suggest darkening the URC a bit.

Sandy, such a nice find and capture. I agree with @Mike_Friel in his comments and suggestion. In fact, it looks like the beetle is sitting on the continent of Africa! Pretty cool. The shape reminds me of Africa a little. Nicely done.

Nice composition – interesting beetle and flower head with nice soft light, lovely detail and good DOF. The BG looks artificially blurred, though. BGs are a nemesis in this kind of composition, but I wonder if a slightly different treatment would work – low-opacity cloning maybe?

No artificial BG here - just a low F-stop and the BG a distance away.

Very nice image, Sandy. The yellow yarrow sets the beetle off nicely and you got excellent depth of field. I could see darkening that upper right corner as @Mike_Friel suggested, though I didn’t notice it at first.

Sandy: I’m really pleased that the beetle is a nice flat black and not shiny. Set off so well by the flower. Nice find and a fine capture. >=))>
