Prima Donna Dwarf Iris — Repost

Okay, I did a bit of work on this image. It was difficult to begin with because the scene was so low contrast. I think that it’s a little more contrasty, but I am not sure it’s enough. Will appreciate feedback. Thanks!

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

This is another image from my dwarf iris portfolio. They were so much fun to photograph in spite of the bright sun and challenge using the diffuser or just finding one in the shade.

Specific Feedback

I always appreciate the keen insights of fellow photographers in NPN!

My first impression is one of early photography. Compressed dynamic range and block forms with limited detail. Reminds me of the Cottingley fairy pictures in how ghostly this is. Not the fraud part, just the way the images feel.

I like the composition and the layering. I wish you’d found an angle that worked both for the foliage and that would give us a more open view to the flower itself. It’s closed off here and maybe that is part of your message with this photo. It takes a while to get used to the relatively low contrast and detail, but once my eyes settle in, I find it pleasing and interesting. An imaginative view to something relatively mundane.

Thanks, @Kris_Smith. I agree with much of what you say. The tonalities and contrast were intentional. I can always change that. I should have named this “Hidden Iris” or something like that!

I don’t think you need to change the contrast/tonalities at all, and I’m sorry if I implied that you should. Trends come and go with photography as you probably well know, so I like when a photo comes along that bucks those with intention. Besides intent, a picture needs to work because the photographer used a technique that is appropriate while going against what’s popular. In other words not just to be contrary. If that makes sense.

Il think you have a lovely composition here, but for me the low contrast just doesn’t work. I doesn’t feel like a normal low contrast treatment, but maybe something like negative clarity. In any case, I’d love to see a less extreme treatment. I think the image has great potential.
