Purple Rain

Description:

With apologies to all the Prince fans out there. This purple building in Red Bluff, California, long abandoned, is a favorite of ours. Looking through the car windshield in a pouring rain made for an interesting perspective.

Specific Feedback Requested:

Any comments welcome. I’ve never noticed that blue streak across the bottom, but now it’s bugging me. Is it too distracting?

Pertinent technical details or techniques:

Shot through the windshield, with a wide-open aperture, focused on the building, so the rain streaks on the windshield wouldn’t be in focus. A bit of dodging/burning to even out exposure, curve for contrast.

GORGEOUS!! The old building looks wonderful and the distortions through the wet windshield are perfect! The tree adds a perfect touch, with the hint of another one on the left. I like the blue area as there are cyans in the windows and maybe some hints of blue other places. I wonder about adding some blue toward the top left to balance the area at the bottom… Maybe a larger very feathered burn in the lighter area toward the UL??

I really like this one, Bonnie. The blue streak doesn’t bother me as that tone is picked up in several other places around the edges of the image. Your location to pull the trees into the image worked very well and I’m glad you got them when not in leaf as the bare branches fit the mood much better than they would have with leaves.

I played with this last spring waiting for lunch companions to show up in a heavy rain. The distortions can be very interesting as in this case.

Bonnie - I really love this - what an interesting and unusual image, shot with vision and imagination!
From here, exactly the right amount of blur, saturation, and abstract detail!
Excellent!

This is really interesting and would make a nice piece of impressionist art on a wall Bonnie. I grew up in Corning, and my wife grew up in Red Bluff. Her dad who now lives with us knows this building well. He was a longtime PG&E trouble maker, er, trouble shooter there in Tehama County. Thanks for the post. It is very nostalgic.

Thanks, @Diane_Miller, @Dennis_Plank, @SandyR-B, and @Ed_Williams for your thoughts and recommendations.

It’s a small world! What does he say about what this building was in the past? There’s some interesting stuff you can see through the front window (at least a while ago). I’d love to hear the back story.

Bonnie. He says he thinks it belonged to Max and Peewee Cavett. Max had been a PG&E lineman until he was injured. Then he went to work running the printing press where his wife worked at the Daily News. He thinks. . .

Terrific shot, Bonnie. I wouldn’t change anything.

Perfect! If a Prince fan doesn’t like it they are not a true fan.

Lovely interpretation of a fairly common scene through artistic vision, Bonnie. Wonderful.

The blue at the bottom doesn’t bother me in the least. You could ask the question about the tree on the left. It is character, it is something unexpected that adds to the message, it is something unique - just like the streaking by the water on the windshield. I hope it doesn’t bug you too much.

Thanks, @Matt_Lancaster. The tree on the left doesn’t but me at all - I like the implication that there’s another tree beyond the edge of the frame.
